While the dog days of August are perhaps the worst time to run a primary for a State Rep seat, residents of South Norwalk and parts of West Norwalk have one this year. Travis Simms, the incumbent is being challenged by long time community leader and challenger Carleton Giles. Neither candidate received an endorsement by the Norwalk Democratic party. Norwalk’s 140th House District represents South Norwalk and parts of West Norwalk in the Oak Hills neighborhood.
Simms has represented the district since 2018, after serving on the Norwalk Common Council. Giles is a former Norwalk Police officer and currently a Pastor.
Giles spent 33 years working in as a police officer in Norwalk. He has always served Norwalk’s community with grace under pressure. In 2013 he was appointed to be a member of the State’s Board of Pardons and Paroles, in addition to a fulfilling career as Pastor. He currently serves as Chairman of the State’s Parol board. Giles holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Safety Administration, a leadership certificate from Interdenominational Theological Center, Atlanta Georgia, and several graduate credits from Yale Divinity School.
Simms is a former world champion boxer.
Since 2018 South Norwalk seen many changes but few improvements. The issues facing the district require complex and compassionate understanding of how economic development has impacted the area’s residents.
Early voting for the primary starts on Monday, Aug. 5, and ends on Aug. 11. The primary day is Tuesday, Aug. 13.
