Town Fair Tires will make it easier if locations are your thing. They are a local chain that has service centers in West Norwalk, and on Main Ave. Hank May’s anchors the Westport Ave corridor. But Currie’s Tires, on West Ave. is one of a kind.
Oldest Tire Shop in Norwalk
Currie’s has been operating at this location since the days of Norwalk being an actual tire manufacturing center. Yes, you read that right. Norwalk Tires was a thing in the 1920s through the 1950s. Around the same time Norwalk was home to the Melton Automobile Museum, had an airport, and was known as a place to ignore the prohibition of alcohol.
Currie’s operates in its original building, stubbornly resisting selling out to the grand vision of building apartment buildings on every square inch of land along West Ave. The building, architecturally, is exactly how it looked when it was first converted to a service station. Duke Currie initially established it as a 24-hour truck stop and gas station. “It became the largest truck stop on the East Coast because it was the only one between New York and Massachusetts,” Tim shared in an interview with News 12. That was over 95 years ago, and since then, the family has kept the shop thriving now with the fourth-generation brothers Adam and Tim Currie.
That history is in every corner of the shop. From the many vintage tools next to modern ones, to the vintage signs and photos covering the walls, Currie’s is a nostalgic window into Norwalk’s past.
