Before Family Diner, it was called George’s Diner. Anchoring the commercial strip near Freese Park, this is a vintage Mountain View Diner. Mountain View Diners Company was founded in 1939 by Les Daniel and Henry Strys in Little Falls, New Jersey. They manufactured prefabricated diners, shipping them across America until 1957. New Jersey was at one time the largest manufacturer of diners. This also means that the Diner has been here since at least the 1960s.
The Family Diner has been closed for a number of years, but you can still visit a Mountain View Diner in New Haven. It’s been an Indian Restaurant for at least 30 years, and remains intact with an architectural drawing hanging proudly in its interior. Tandoor Indian Restaurant is located at 1226 Chapel St in New Haven.
In 1986, it was captured on a road-trip by diner enthusiasts. Check out the vintage pictures here.
